Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
Christopher Newport University is in compliance with this standard. The University's extensive policy concerning intellectual property is published in the Board of Visitors section of the University Handbook and on the university website. The policy is broad reaching and is designed to protect the equities of the authors, the inventors, and the university; define the responsibilities, rights and privileges of those involved; and establish basic guidelines in the administration of the policy. Scholarly activities are defined in the University Handbook (Section II, 2.h.) as including research papers, books, inventions, computer software, musical scores, articles for magazines and journals, and new technologies.
The policy addresses ownership, compensation, copyright issues, and the use of revenue derived from the creation and production of intellectual property. The policy applies to all full and part-time faculty, classified employees, administrative staff, and students who are paid for specific work by the University. Intellectual Property policies apply to all employees, including visiting faculty and researchers, employees and visitors covered under sponsored research program agreements or other contractual arrangements, and employed students. In addition, the policy addresses student ownership of intellectual property when the students are also employees of the University as well as copyrightable works developed in connection with course work assignments by students not employed by the University.
The University's Committee on Intellectual Property is responsible for making policy recommendations to the President for patents, copyrights and related mechanisms for the protection/exploitation of intellectual properties in which the university may have proprietary interest. The Committee has two subcommittees: (1) patents and (2) copyrights.
Additional oversight is provided by the State Council of Higher Education which annually requires intellectual property reporting. CNU follows the “Guidelines for the Development of Patent and Copyright Policies and Procedures by State-Supported Institutions of Higher Education” published by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
