3.2.3 The board has a policy addressing conflict of interest for its members.

Judgment of Compliance:
Compliance

Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
Christopher Newport University is in compliance with this standard. CNU adheres to the State and Local Government Conflict of Interest Act (University Handbook 06-07, XIII.5). Conflict of interest statements are required annually by the Commonwealth of Virginia Code of Virginia. These statements stipulate that the Board members have no contractual, employment, personal, or familial financial interest in the institution and are required for all Board of Visitor members.

CNU's Office of Human Resources collects these statements for officers of the university. Each December, the Office of Human Resources sends a letter to all CNU personnel who have been designated as falling under the requirements of the Code of Virginia 2.2 – 3114 and Executive Order 53 (2003). The Statement of Economic Interests form must be completed and returned in January, and forwarded to the Office of the Governor.

The Office of Sponsored Programs exercises its Conflict of Interest and Commitment Policy for Research and Sponsored Programs to collect information about possible conflicts of interest from research faculty. Conflicts of interest are defined as situations in which faculty or staff members may have the opportunity to influence the University's business decisions in ways that could lead to personal gain or give improper advantage to members of their families, dependents, or associates. Conflicts of commitment are defined as situations in which external activities of faculty members or staff members interfere or appear to interfere with their paramount obligations to their students, colleagues, and the University. Non-compliance with the conflict of interest policy or these procedures may result in the suspension of termination of a sponsored project. Copies of all approved conflict of interest forms are filed with the University's Office of Sponsored Programs.
