Undergraduate Admission
The Admissions' section of Christopher Newport University's 2006-2007 Undergraduate Catalog describes the general policies on admissions for freshmen, transfers, non-degree seeking students, readmits, international students, and high school students seeking college courses. As stated, CNU's admission policies are regularly reviewed and affirmed by its Board of Visitors. It is the policy of CNU to admit students whose ability and preparation indicate potential for success in the programs of study offered. Applicants must meet published deadlines for application for admission. CNU accepts the best qualified applicants on a space-available basis.
General requirements include graduation from an accredited secondary school or its equivalent, as shown by examination and SAT-I or ACT scores. In addition, international students must submit official, translated academic transcripts, a financial certification form guaranteeing that adequate U.S. funds are available for college study, and scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of 530 or higher for the paper test and 197 or higher for the computerized test.
The policies for admission include the ranges of students generally accepted to the University for freshmen, transfers, non-degree seekers, and students in high school seeking college credits. Standards reflect the selective nature of the University, which reserves the right to admit those students deemed best qualified and to limit the number of students admitted for each term, based on space availability. Each applicant is reviewed individually. For 2004-05, mid-range scores for successful Freshman applicants were 3.0 to 3.8 grade point average and a 1080 – 1250 SAT. In addition, transfer students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and eligible to return to the last college or university attended in order to be admitted to CNU.
Students who do not wish to seek a degree and/or are taking classes for career enhancement or personal growth must meet the prerequisites for individual courses. Non-degree applicants must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and eligible to return to the last college or university attended in order to be admitted to CNU and have a 3.0 overall GPA on past academic work.
Senior citizens are permitted to register and enroll in courses as full-time or part-time students for academic credit, without charge, providing taxable income for federal income tax purposes does not exceed $15,000 for the year preceding the enrollment year. Senior citizens may enroll without charge for audit credit and in non-credit courses. Senior citizens must meet applicable admissions requirements.
Admission to the Joseph W. Luter III School of Business is selective and based on the successful completion of requirements in the freshman and sophomore years of study. These include 8 specific courses in which a grade of no less than a “C” may be achieved: English 123 and ULLC 223; Math 125 and 135; Accounting 201 and 202; Economics 201 and 202; and Computer Science 215. Admission to the Luter School of Business is described in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2006-2007 and on the University's website.
Graduate Admission
In keeping with the mission to “serve the Commonwealth with Master's degree programs that provide intellectual and professional development for graduate-level students,” CNU admits graduate students whose ability and preparation indicate potential for success. Applicants must submit an official transcript of their baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Official transcripts of graduate course work taken at other universities must also be submitted. The Master of Science in Environmental Science and in Applied Physics and Computer Science require the Graduate Record Examination, and the Master of Arts in Teaching requires the PRAXIS I. Students entering the five-year Baccalaureate to Masters programs may be admitted based upon their SAT-I scores if the scores are no more than five-years old and sufficient to meet a minimum requirement. All applicants provide three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to judge the applicant's potential to complete the graduate program successfully.
Applicants may apply as degree-seeking and as non-degree seeking. The minimum grade point average for both is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. For five-year students, admission to the program is usually granted in the second semester of the junior year. However, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA. or higher in order to continue.
