Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
Christopher Newport University is in compliance with this comprehensive standard. After the academic year 2005-2006, credit for course work deriving from military education and training will no longer be awarded. Until 2006, the Office of Admissions evaluated such work using the SMART Transcripts, AARTS, DD Forms 214 and 295, or CCAF transcripts. “Lower-Level Elective” credit is awarded for the Military Education. AARTS and SMART transcripts track all of a service member's or veteran's military training and coursework. AARTS transcripts are available to regular army enlisted soldiers, veterans, and active-duty Army National Guard personnel and reservists. The SMART transcript contains the military coursework and training evaluated by American Council on Education while serving in the Navy or Marine Corps. Both AARTS and SMART include courses and occupations evaluated by ACE and include descriptions, learning outcomes, equivalent college credit recommendations, and national college-level exam results.
CNU defines non-traditional credit as credit that is not earned in the classroom of a regionally-accredited college or university. A maximum of 60 semester hours of non-traditional credit may currently be applied toward a bachelor's degree at CNU. Examples from the Transfer and Readmit Student Resource Guidebook include credit for civilian and military educational and training programs evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) and appearing in The National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs and Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.
