Section 3: Comprehensive Standards
3.6.3 The majority of credits toward a graduate or post-baccalaureate professional degree are earned through the institution awarding the degree. In the case of graduate and post-baccalaureate professional degree programs offered through joint, cooperative or consortial arrangements, the student earns a majority of credits from the participating institutions.

Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
Christopher Newport University is in compliance with this comprehensive standard. The majority of credits toward a graduate degree are earned through CNU. CNU does not offer any graduate programs through joint, cooperative, or consortial arrangements. As stated in the Graduate Academic Policies in the Graduate Catalog, transfer credits for courses taken elsewhere will be granted only if the student has prior written approval and earns a grade of B- or better. A graduate student may transfer a maximum of 6 credit hours into CNU. Any graduate transfer credit is listed on the student's transcript under the name of the university where the credit was earned.
The three degree program requirements range from 30 to 36 required credit hours, and the three five-year bachelors to masters programs range from 21 to 27 hours. Allowing only 6 hours as transfer credits ensures that the majority of credits are earned in residence at CNU. Policies are enforced by the Office of Graduate Studies and the Office of the Registrar. Program faculty also review program graduates' transcripts before graduation.
