Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
Christopher Newport University is in compliance with this comprehensive standard. The primary source of recruitment information—the University Viewbook, a 27-page, hard-copy publication—is distributed during campus visits (over 12,000 per year), in response to inquiries on the prospective student database (over 19,000 in Fall 2005), and to over 4,000 high schools on our mailing list in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina, and a variety of other states as a result of counselors inquiries. The Viewbook is supported by the Admissions website, a prominent part of University's web page and a DVD presentation about the University distributed to high schools, prospective students, and parents throughout the year. Numerous links on the admissions site lead students to explore financial aid, housing, and the merit scholarship program, among other topics. The DVD is a part of the admissions website. In addition, recruitment information appears in the introductory section of the University Catalog, which is available online as well.

Recruitment information includes a message from the President, a campus overview, University “quick facts,” pictures, academic highlights, majors, minors, areas of study, student and alumni testimonials, cost of attendance, scholarship and financial aid information, visit and Open House information, and standards for admission.

Applications for admission are available online in printable and electronic formats, and hard-copy applications are mailed and distributed as well. About 80 percent of freshmen apply online.

Graduate information is distributed primarily on the University website, along with the Graduate Catalog. This includes information about the application process, the University's three graduate programs, cost of attendance, and services available through the Office of Graduate Studies on campus. Recruiting postcards are sent to prospective students. These cards invite the student to review the program offerings and other information on the Graduate Studies website. The Office of Graduate Studies also uses on-line recruiting services such as Peterson's and GradSchool.com. The Associate Director of Graduate Admissions and Records reviews all the information provided on these sites.

The Office of the Registrar handles transfer admission, and application information is available online, in the University catalog, and in handouts provided for prospective transfer students each semester.

All application and recruitment information is reviewed by appropriate offices, including Admissions, Graduate Admissions, the Registrar, contributing offices, the Vice President for Student Services, the Director of University Relations, the Chief of Staff, and the President of CNU.

Tour guides are trained throughout the year, beginning with a day-long session prior to the start of the academic session. Training includes dress, demeanor, and campus highlights, as well as how to make each presentation personal and motivational.

University admissions officers receive extensive training each summer, including verbal presentations, presentation style, highlights to be included, and updates on printed facts about the University and new achievements. To ensure the accuracy and reliability in recruitment, admissions officers participate in a three-day planning session, plus a review of new information after this meeting, observation of presentations, and when possible, attendance at VACRAO New Counselor Training Programs.
